Los Losares Monastrell is the new signature wine from Bodegas Piqueras. It is a surprising wine, made entirely using Monastrell grapes from a single vineyard plot, where the vines are over 80 years old. In this inaugural vintage, the wine is being launched in a limited edition of 6,000 bottles.
Following the success of “Los Losares Tintorera”, we wanted to extend this range by adding a fresh, elegant wine in a more Atlantic or continental style. At the same time we had to stay true to the character of the Almansa Denomination of Origin while focusing on the Monastrell grape variety, one of the flagship varieties of our region. The vineyards for this new wine are located in “Los Losares” at an altitude of about 900 metres, characterized by its very stony soil and its special microclimate.
To achieve what we were looking for with Los Losares Monastrell, we aged this single vineyard wine in large 5,000-litre casks. This resulted in a wine that is an attractive dark cherry red in colour, highly expressive on the nose and just right for everyday drinking. The primary aromas of the fruit and the local landscape are to the fore, with a discreet background of oak adding roundness. This makes Los Losares Monastrell a perfect pairing with Mediterranean rice dishes, and also with white meat, or it can simply be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif with friends or family.
Los Losares Monastrell, a signature wine with true Almansa character
Juan Cantos, the winemaker at Bodegas Piqueras, underlines the importance of the launch of Los Losares Monastrell as it puts “centre stage the other flagship variety of our Almansa Denomination of Origin.”
For Bodegas Piqueras it means “continuing to advance in high-end single vineyard wines”, showcasing the Monastrell grape in a wine of “true Almansa character”. It is a signature wine “to suit all tastes, one that’s not too heavy, and whose aromas seem to take you right into the vineyard and that unique location.
Ageing the wine in large 5,000-litre casks prevents the oak from predominating, allowing the retention of the character of the vineyard, so that “it is above all the primary product that is centre stage with this Los Losares Monastrell.”
