Sakura Japan Women’s Wine has awarded Valcanto Syrah 2012 and Castillo de Almansa Reserva 2011 with the gold and silver medals respectively, in recognition of their superior quality.

The international competition of great prestige in Japan and one of the most important in Asia, celebrates its third edition in 2016. With a jury formed exclusively by women, the contest has gained a great impact both in the professional circles of the sector and with Japanese wine consumers. A total of 380 women took part as jury, among them sommeliers, winemakers, journalists or those responsible for marketing wines that have valued 3,543 wines from 35 countries around the world.

Valcanto Syrah 2012 from Bodegas Piqueras, awarded with gold, is a 100% syrah red wine with a lot of body and with spicy aromas of red cherries, plums and blackberries and notes of black pepper. It is a balanced wine with excellent acidity, smooth and elegant on the palate. The silver medal has been for the Castillo de Almansa Reserva 2011, a wine made up of 50% Monastrell, 30% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha Tintorera with aromas of raspberries, stewed plums, spices and vanilla notes. It is a delicate wine on the palate with a great depth and a soft persistent finish.

The ceremony and delivery of the Sakura Japan Women’s Wine Awards will take place next March 8th during the food and drinks fair, FOODEX 2016 in Tokyo, the largest exhibition of samples of the Horeca sector in Asia.
