Bodegas Piqueras from the DO Almansa wine region of Spain has yet again been highly acclaimed by one of the foremost wine competitions in the world. On this occasion, our winery was awarded a total of five awards by Mundus Vini 2020 – the best results obtained thus far for our wines in this competition with three gold and two silver medals.
Our unreleased ‘Castillo de Almansa Selección Old Vines 2015’ was not only awarded a gold medal but also nominated as the ‘Best in Show from Almansa’. The Castillo de Almansa Selección Old Vines is a coupage of Monastrell, Tempranillo, Garnacha Tintorera and Syrah grapes, sourced from some of our oldest ungrafted (pre-Phylloxera) dry-farmed vineyards and aged in 300L fine-grain new French Allier oak barrels for 14 months.
For the second consecutive year the unreleased 2017 vintage of our ‘Piqueras Gold Label’ organic red wine has also won a gold medal. This wine is a new project with grapes being sourced from the vineyards of our recently acquired ‘El Vínculo’ organic estate. The wine is a classic example of a GSM coupage of dry-farmed bush-vine Monastrell, Garnacha Tintorera and Syrah from old vineyards cultivated in sandy soils. This wine is aged in 500L fine-grain French Allier two and three years-old barrels to maintain its freshness and elegance.
The ‘Castillo de Almansa Reserva’ was the third wine to receive a gold medal. Traditionally this has been the most emblematic wine of Bodegas Piqueras and a best-seller from Spain in several international markets including Canada. The wine is made from old dry-farmed bush-vine Monastrell, Garnacha Tintorera and Tempranillo and aged in 300L fine-grain American oak barrels for 12 months.
The 2018 vintage of our highly popular and acclaimed ‘Castillo de Almansa Crianza’ was awarded a silver medal. The wine is a blend of grapes sourced from 40+ years-old Monastrell, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards and aged for six months in two and three years-old 300L fine-grain American oak barrels.
As with the 2017 vintage the unreleased ‘Piqueras Old Vines 2018’ organic red wine was also awarded a silver medal. Produced from 100% Garnacha Tintorera (a.k.a. Alicante Bouschet), the native grape of our wine region, from a single vineyard of 50+ years old ungrafted vines. This wine is aged in one and two years-old American and French fine grain oak barrels for around six months.
Yet again we are very proud that our winery was amongst Spain’s most acclaimed wineries at this prestigious German international wine competition. Juan Pablo Cantos Serrano, our winemaker, emphasized the importance of these awards for our international partners in more than 40 countries and suggested that they are a clear manifestation of all the efforts and determination of the entire team at Bodegas Piqueras to make quality estate wines to be enjoyed every day around the world.
