Red Grapes

Garnacha Tintorera is the indigenous grape of D.O. Almansa. Unlike other red grape varieties, Garnacha Tintorera has red flesh due to its high phenolic content and hence produces wines that are a deep red. We work with it to make special, high quality wines, both as a single variety and in blended ranges, to produce both young and oak-aged wines.
The Monastrell grape, known as Mourvèdre in France, is one of Spain’s most important wine grapes, celebrated for its capacity to produce strong, tannic wines that can be high in alcohol. We use it both for single variety wines and also in blends with other varieties, such as Syrah, to produce very high quality wines in a modern style.
The Syrah grape has adapted perfectly to the Almansa climate. We use it to make spicy wines that are full of colour and flavour. We like to use it for single variety wines and blends.
The strong colour of this variety’s skins is ideal to make our bright rosé wines.
The most recent addition of vines at Bodegas Piqueras are Merlot, a grape that produces delicious, elegant wines that are fresh and bursting with red fruit.
Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world’s most renowned grape varieties. It has been grown relatively recently in this part of the world, but it is a grape that adapts well to our climate, to produce wines of a deep colour. This noble variety is high in polyphenols, making it ideal for our full-bodied oak-aged wines.
Ours is historically a red wine locality, as the D.O. Almansa as a whole has been. At Bodegas Piqueras we were the first in the area to plant white grapes. We have opted for international noble varieties that produce excellent results on our soil.

White Grapes

Verdejo is ideal for white wines that have good fullness in the mouth. We blend this eagerly responsive grape that with Sauvignon Blanc to create an aromatic, refreshing white wine.
Our Sauvignon Blanc grapes have high levels of sugar alongside good acidity. This helps to produce elegant, dry, sharp wines that are also very aromatic, which we usually blend with Verdejo for our young white wines.
